Sentimental Sunday - People watchin' like my dad

As I posted earlier my husband, step-daughter and I made a day of  being down by the river and listening to great Beatles' music. Also as I posted earlier it was going to be a day without genealogy or so I thought. As we sat there listening to the music I started doing something that I believe has ran in my family for generations....people watchin’ !

No Genealogy Sunday!

Today will be a day with NO GENEALOGY! How ever will I be able to stand it!!! My husband and I and his youngest daughter will be spending the day listing to some great music at "Abby Road on the River - The World's Largest Beatles Festival" This is the same festival where my profile picture was taken last year. The photographer was covering the festival for the local newspaper no less! Probably one of the best pictures that I have ever had taken! Anyway, hopefully, I won't get sunburned as I have in years past.

Wordless Wednesday – Harry Washington (Wash) Shofner Obit

This week is the obituary of my grandmother’s brother, Harry Washington Shofner. Everybody called him Wash or Washie. Again, unfortunately, the obit doesn’t give the date.

Madness Monday/Munday – William Munday of Jefferson County, Kentucky

First things first, sorry I couldn’t help the pun on the name. Anyway, yet another one of my madness monday postings is going to be about the Munday family from which I descend.  Although this posting isn’t really about the one from which I descend. WHAT?

Treasure Chest Thursday – Potholders?

While setting the table for supper tonight I noticed the two potholders that you see below.

What’s so special about them that I would want to make them a topic of a Treasure Chest Thursday, you ask? Well, nothing really I guess. They are from about the 1960’s or early 70’s and are just a local company’s advertising potholder (if that’s even a category!) Where did they come from you ask? Well my father’s parents owned and ran a grocery store in Magnolia, Kentucky from the mid 1960’s until 1976 or so. They were always getting advertising or promotional things from the people that came into the store to try and get them to carry their brand of goods. I have no doubt that that is from were these originate. These came from their house when we were clearing it out after their deaths.

I do remember them being on my grandparents kitchen table under the numerous hot dishes that were served up there. I can’t tell you how many times I remember putting them in the “potholder” drawer while cleaning up after supper. So I guess they are a special part of my past and a connection to my grandparents that I had not thought of for a long time.

52 Weeks to Better Genealogy – Challenge 17 – Label Family Photos

Well, as usual when I start something it leads to fourteen other things that I had been meaning to do. When I saw the posting from Geneabloggers telling me that the latest challenge in Amy Coffin’s 52 week series was titled, ”Label Family Photos”, I thought, “I’ve been meaning to do that!”

Researching Charles W Greenwell

As I mentioned in my posting, Thoughts about a phone conversation, one of the things that I learned in a recent phone conversation with an elderly cousin was the name of the person who had given my grandmother and her sisters some gifts. I also mentioned that I needed to do some more research in order to find out if in fact Charles Greenwell was a cook in the White House as my elderly cousin told me.

Thoughts about a phone conversation

Preface to this story. I’m an only child, my father was an only child. Therefore, ALL of my cousins on my dad’s side are at the very least 1st cousins once removed if not more. So when I say cousins in this posting please know that they are not first cousins and that they are all at the youngest in there 70’s. Except Neil who was a 3rd cousin.

I called an elderly cousin of mine a couple of nights ago, who I had not talked to in quite a while (let's say 6 or 7 years) and caught up on a lot of the family happenings, aka “gossip.” There's always seems to be one in every family that keeps up with who is living with who, where they’re working
