Grandpa told me when that this doll had been given to him by his parents. I want to say he told me it had been a birthday present. I also vaguely remember that he said he wasn't very old when they gave it to him, like maybe 4 or 5, maybe 6. So I'm totally guessing that she dates to about 1920 or so. I have yet to understand why they gave him a doll but nonetheless it was his.
She is made out of bisque or porcelain, jointed at the shoulders and hips. No maker's mark that I could find and as you can see is a little more than 4 1/2 inches tall.
I think she is just the cutest thing. The dress and underpants were crocheted by grandpa's oldest sister, aunt Flossie Caswell, while she was in the nursing home.
Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)
What a curious gift to give a small boy, How wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet family heirloom! And what makes it even more of an heirloom is the hand crocheted dress and panties! Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI'll admit I did a bit of a double-take when I saw that the doll was your grandfather's, but then I remembered the stuffed rabbits I had as a little boy, and the stuff rabbits I bought my own son later. The doll is a great thing to have in your family.
