Torie O'Shea Mysteries - a great series of books!

Ok guys, I have started and almost finished reading a series of books that I just had to tell you all about. High five

The series is written by Rett MacPherson and is called the "Torie O'Shea mysteries" and the main character is a {drum-roll please} genealogist!

I found this series on the website http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/JobCats/Genealogists.html. I had bookmarked this site several months ago after reading about it on Dick Eastman’s blog at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2010/10/genealogy-mysteries.html

I have read nine of the eleven books in the series. Each book averages about 210-230 pages and I have been flying through each of them in about 2 or 3 days.

I don't know about the rest of you but for me that is "flying through" a book, because I am by no stretch of the imagination a speed reader.

To answer a question that my husband always asks when I tell him about a series that I am reading, each one of her books is a complete story with a individual plot and conclusion. So you can pick up the series at any point and understand what is going on.

The main character of each book is Victory O’Shea, called Torie throughout the series. Torie is a genealogist, wife and mother that works at her local historical society and gives tours of the historic house in period costume…..AAAAHHHH!! How do I get a job like that?

Sorry, back to the stories. Every one of the stories, except two so far, has a mystery that happens in her home town of New Kassel, Missouri. Well when these murders or strange occurrences happen, Torie takes it upon herself to nose around to "help" solve the mystery. Mainly because she is too nosy and curious to let the local sheriff figure out whodunit.

The thing that I think is so cool is that she uses genealogy to help solve the mystery. Isn't that exactly what each one of us, genealogists, are trying to do? Solve a mystery in our family....well ok we don't find actual dead bodies or have bad guys shooting at us, but trying to solving a mystery nonetheless.

Ms MacPherson has done her own genealogy so she really understands the ins and outs of doing research, what type of records are available and writes the characters and the story so that a non-genealogist will understand also.

So if in your spare time (I know what is that?) you may want to try one of these books, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Hope you enjoyed, glad you stopped by and please come back again ;)

  1. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Torie O'shea series and have two left to read. Is Rett MacPherson wringing anymore?
